In Nvidias High-End-Segment ist es eng: Unterhalb der GeForce RTX 3090, zwischen der GeForce RTX 3080 und der 3080 Ti, platziert sich seit Januar noch die neue 12-GB-Version der GeForce RTX 3080. Ein Test der GeForce RTX 3080 mit 12 GB fehlte auf ComputerBase noch. Mit der Suprim X von MSI holt die Redaktion das jetzt nach.

Ohne Vorab-Treiber und somit ohne Review am Starttag führte NVIDIA vor wenigen Tagen die GeForce RTX 3080 mit 12 GB anstatt wie bisher 10 GB an Grafikspeicher ein. Neben dem größeren Speicher gibt es auch noch ein paar zusätzliche Funktionseinheiten und schon ist eine Karte fertig, die für NVIDIA vor allem dazu da ist, eine höhere UVP zu rechtfertigen. Doch zur Einschätzung des Preises kommen wir noch. Zunächst einmal wollen wir uns ein solches Modell in Form der MSI GeForce RTX 3080 12G Suprim X genauer anschauen.

I'm giving our Recommended award to the RTX 3080 Suprim X because it's a fantastic custom-design with an excellent cooler, good factory overclock, large power limit increase, and good fan settings (in quiet mode). However, it was a close call because the card is definitely not for everyone at that price point; it's just SO much money. But if you're in the market for a high-end graphics card, it's definitely a product worth considering.

MSI's custom GeForce RTX 3080 SUPRIM X 12G LHR is a force to be reckoned with, keeps up with the RTX 3080 Ti at stock, and beats both the RTX 3080 Ti + RTX 3090 with some OC. rnrnThe GA102 GPU with more CUDA cores + 12GB of VRAM + 384-bit memory bus + MSI SUPRIM X style = winning package.

If memory serves me right, the original 3080 was introduced in September 2020; and we're now in January 2022. With the 3080 reconfigured to 12GB, a handful more shaders available, and a wider memory bus NVIDIA seems to be buying time. In that respect, we're left wondering what this release is truly about? This release has the appearance of a product released to buy additional time for the next generation of competing graphics cards. Which makes sense. We believe NVIDIA is observing the GPU releases from Intel and AMD. Reorganizing, reshuffling, and repositioning items to achieve optimal performance is what they're doing. Also, fabbing GPUs these days takes money and time, the world is still facing a chip shortage. So yeah, time is trivial here. Back to the product though. Without a doubt, we like the GeForce RTX 3080 12GB for what it is; and the MSI SUPRIM X in particular. Indeed, MSI has a wild card with the SUPRIM X. Despite the prophetic moniker, this is a graphics card that exudes quality at that hardware level; the hardware is outstanding. The aesthetics are fantastic; with a metal backplate, a freshly designed cooler, and dual BIOS, is the price premium justified? To be honest, we have some reservations about that. However, this is the pinnacle of over-engineering. Bear in mind that all cards are roughly in the same performance range, resulting in a paltry 5% increase in performance over a 3080 12GB FE edition (if it would exist) for this reshuffled and beefed-up offering. In general, I believe that everyone would concur with me; we would all love to acquire a 3080 12GB. This is an excellent close to an enthusiast-class graphics card that is extremely well-balanced. Essentially, it's a 3090 with half the RAM and configuration changes. I'm quite pleased with the 12GB RAM, but 10 GB is just as fine as well. In the year 2022, 12GB is a well-balanced number though. You'll be considerably ahead of the competition in the top performance regions, and even at Ultra HD, you can enable Raytracing, when combined with DLSS the performance can be dazzling. MSI's offering of the GeForce RTX 3080 12GB works admirably on all fronts, including performance, cooling, and acoustics, as a complete package. Ultimately, the choice comes down to availability and... cost at the end-user level. If etailers keep their pricing in check, this card will be a hit—and what a card it is. But yeah, a little puzzling it is to see as to why NVIDIA has released this series in a very saturated product stack. Only if you can locate it at a reasonable price, it is recommended.

Abmessungen, Design, Ausstattung und letztendlich auch die Leistungswerte und Messungen sprechen für sich. Allerdings ist der Spielraum, den die Hersteller hier haben, sehr gering geworden. NVIDIA hat mit der GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition eine sehr gute Karte auf die Beine gestellt. Darüber hinaus können sie sich aber nur noch in kleinen Details voneinander absetzen. Die Leistung der MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X bewegt sich im erwarteten Bereich. Sie ist das schnellste Modell bzw. kämpft um die Spitze. Aufgrund der geringen Abstände aber kann es mal passieren, dass andere Modelle etwas schneller sind. Diese Unterschiede können auch mal Messungenauigkeiten sein. Spüren wird man diese geringen Unterschiede in Spielen aber ohnehin nicht. Bei der Lautstärke und den weiteren Messwerten muss man unterscheiden, ob das Gaming- oder Silent-BIOS zum Einsatz kommt. In der Leistung unterscheiden sich die beiden Modi nicht. Das Silent-BIOS aber ist deutlich leiser, führt aber auch zu einer höheren GPU-Temperatur, die aber als unproblematisch einzuschätzen ist. Die Leistungsaufnahme ist mit 377 W recht hoch, aber MSI gibt ihr ein Standard-Power-Limit von 370 W.

The performance of the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X is right in line with other premium offerings from other manufactures based on other RTX 3080 reviews that I’ve read and from talking to my peers since this is the only RTX 3080 I’ve reviewed. While the MSI offering performs just as well, there’s also a significant price for similar raw performance. At $899, the MSI GeForce 3080 Suprim X is $200.00 over the retail Nvidia RTX 3080 Founders Edition and $50 more than the Asus ROG Strix. Still, I can’t help but think of taking that $200.00 and picking up a water block and founders edition. There are trade-offs no matter which way you go. However, to be fair, pricing is not really relevant at the time of this review as retailers are having a hard time maintaining stock levels so consumers can purchase them. Every detail about the MSI GeForce 3080 Suprim X screams that it is a premium product. From the packaging to the included accessories, the cooler, etc. This is MSI’s top of the line RTX 3080. If you’re looking for the top, you’ve found it. However, in the end, it is going to depend on what you want and if you’re willing to let the extra cash leave your wallet for a premium product.

Well, make no mistake, these are both extremely fast cards. I want to start with the RTX 3090 SUPRIM X24G though. It’s one of the fastest cards on the market today, make no mistake. However, it’s not THAT much faster than the RTX 3080 when it comes to gaming, at least not relative to the price increase. This card is for gamers with deep pockets who want the absolute best. However, it’s really for workstations, rendering, game development, that kind of thing. If you need a crapload of VRAM for development, it’s perfect. Beyond that, it’s a bit much for your typical PC gaming setup.

The MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Suprim X is a truly massive card. If you look at the photos you could just assume that it's big but normal sized—nope, it is 34 cm long and 14 cm tall, bigger than any card I've ever tested. MSI went all out in terms of product design, to create this new series, which sits a notch above even the Gaming X. The rated boost has been bumped to 1905 MHz—the highest of all RTX 3080 cards, only the ASUS STRIX and Gigabyte Extreme can match that.

MSI has a fantastic card here at hand with the SUPRIM X. Despite the ominous naming; it's a product that oozes quality at that hardware level; the hardware really is that good. Stil. I am struggling with it as I do not see a substantial relevance for this product. If I am allowed to make a personal note here, I think perhaps the TRIO is a better-looking product? It performs the same with a 1% differential and likely is cheaper (if you can spot one in the stores). So all the extra's like a new look, aluminum backplate, newly designed cooler, and dual BIOS, is it worth a price premium? We doubt that a little. But it is over-engineering at its best. But I mean, if the card would have been substantially faster than the TRIO X, then yeah, probably. But that's not the case. In the end, though, it's a fantastic product, ranking high up there in features and specification. However, Nvidia's project green light defines that all cards are more or less in that same performance bracket, and that results in a meager 4% additional performance seen over the FE edition, for this, all amped and beefed up product. Make no mistake, it's love and fantastic, but is it worth the highest price premium? We doubt that.

MSI’s new Suprim X line proved itself to be more than a competent performer in our testing. Actual performance results were spot on, trading blows with our Asus ROG Strix RTX 3080 card. The new Twin Frozr 2S heatsink gets the job done and does so quietly regardless if you are using the Gaming or Silent modes. Priced at $899, the Suprim X is priced higher than the Asus ($849.99 if you can find them). The biggest difference between these cards outside of some hardware details is the appearance. Otherwise, these perform similarly enough where performance isn’t setting the cards apart. In the end, the MSI RTX 3080 Suprim X is an improvement over the Gaming X Trio and fits in well in the product stack. Its place in the market at the $899 price point may be a bit too much for some users to overcome a $90 difference between the two. But if you want MSI’s (read: any brand’s) flagship RTX 3080, you’re going to pay a premium of some sort. As the stock of the Ampere cards improves over time, we hope to get the Gigabyte Aorus RTX 3080 ($850), and the EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra ($810), in for review to see how they compare. In the meantime, the MSI RTX 3080 Suprim X is a worthy competitor to the listed and tested cards. Whether or not the price premium is worth it, is up to you. But you won’t find a much more stout and well rounded card than the Suprim X.

The MSRP of the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 SUPRIM X is $899, which is significantly higher than NVIDIA's Founders Edition. For the slight performance improvement, we suspect that kind of premium is going to be tough to justify for some folks, but we'd consider this card to be one of the more aggressive GeForce RTX 3080 options available, and it will provide ample opportunity for enthusiasts to tweak and tune performance. Then again, with the current GPU availability woes, finding one of these cards anywhere close to MSRP is a near impossibility, which is unfortunate. On its merit though, we really like the MSI GeForce RTX 3080 SUPRIM X. It's kind of big and it commands a premium, but it is one of the most desirable, GeForce RTX 3080s yet.

On Tuesday I took a look at the new RTX 3070 Founders Edition as a look at Nvidia’s new Ampere-based GPU ahead of today's launch. Well in addition to the launch, today is also when the embargo drops for aftermarket RTX 3070’s and I’m lucky enough to have the RTX 3070 XC3 Black from EVGA on hand to check out. The RTX 3070 Founders Edition performed well, but today I’m excited to see what an overclock and a different cooler can do. Especially with EVGA going with a more traditional full-length PCB and cooler here over the short PCB that the Founders Edition had to support their unique blow-through design.

So bekommt auch die GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio ein 340-Watt-BIOS verpasst und ist unter Last trotzdem sehr zurückhaltend, bezüglich Lautstärke. Nach und nach erreichen uns weitere Partner-Karten der GeForce RTX 3080. Heute im Test sehen wir die MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio 10G. Um sich von der Founders Edition abzusetzen, bleibt den Herstellern ein kleines Leistungsplus sowie eine effektivere Kühlung. Da aber auch NVIDIA hier mit der Founders Edition einen Schritt nach vorne gemacht hat, wird es für die Partner immer schwieriger.

Mit Asus GeForce RTX 3080 TUF und MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio stellen sich die ersten Custom-Designs der Founders Edition im Test. Ihr Vorteil gegenüber Nvidias Variante ist der leisere Betrieb, bei der Leistung tut sich hingegen wenig. Die klassischen 3-Lüfter-Kühlsysteme verlangen allerdings nach Platz.

Turning to the RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio specifically, it’s clear MSI will benefit along with every other partner from the massive demand here. But for more discerning customers, is the card worth the £110 premium? Well, it certainly could be. Its overclock doesn’t add much performance, but that’s nearly always the case for partner cards, especially with the RTX 3080, which doesn’t have much headroom to begin with. At that point, we look to cooler design, build quality, and features.

MSI is asking $760 for their Gaming X Trio, which is a 8.5% price increase. Just the performance increase of 4% alone won't justify that. The larger cooler, with its low noise levels has me convinced though, I'd be willing to take that extra cost, because noise matters to me. Adjustable RGB lighting might be the feature that will lure in others to pick the MSI card, because the Founders Edition has just fixed white lighting. On the other hand, the clean understated looks of the Founders Edition will appeal to many, and it also comes at highly competitive pricing.

So far, I must admit that I’m very impressed with the latest cards from Nvidia, and even more so with the AIB cards such as the MSI RTX 3080 Gaming X Trio we’ve tested today. Of course, I can understand some users are frustrated as we’ve heard claims of “twice the performance” from the previous gen, and while that may be true in some games, at some resolutions, I always think you should take manufacturer claims with a pinch of salt. Let’s put any claimed performance aside though because now we have solid figures. This is the RTX 2080, and it’s clear to all that it gave the RTX 2080 Ti an absolute bloody thrashing. That’s impressive for a card that is launching for roughly half the price of what the Ti did at its launch. Of course, we haven’t tested anything above the 3080 yet, but I expect them to be insanely fast cards. The 2080 Ti is a phenomenal card for 4K gaming, ultra-high frame rates, ray tracing and more. So, for the RTX 3080 to blow the RTX 2080 Ti away at this price point is nothing short of incredible. In all our games, we got past 60 FPS at 4K, a lot past it actually. Well, except Control that averaged an annoying 59.6 FPS, but we’ll let that slide.

...for users who sat out the previous crop of cards, Nvidia's latest £649 GPU represents a monumental upgrade.

MSI, as a brand, gets preferenced by many people. And that's for a valid reason, as when you look at the design, you'll see a PCB that is beautiful architecture with the finest components. As such the quality overall in the past few years has risen significantly. Next to that, you of course, want good looks, a product that runs it's operation temperatures at proper levels, and a price tag to go along with that. For most, if not all, these features MSI checks all the right boxes with the TRIO model. It does run silent and cools properly, and the sheer looks are terrific (but the taste is of course, subjective). Performance-wise really, all cards released will be within a 5% margin towards each other, so that can no longer be a decisive factor in the year 2020, however, this card is immediately at that threshold, all tweaked for you.The looks are dazzling, the silence will impress you.

Overall if you are in the market for a new video card and the RTX 3080 matches your wallet size, the Gaming X TRIO is an excellent choice when it comes to the AIB partner lineup. Those who are looking for the maximum raw performance will truly see an uplift over the Turing generation is not just gaming, but CUDA, Ray-Tracing, and AI workloads. This is in part all thanks to the revamped RTX and Tensor core making it the to-go series for those who want to crank up all the settings and still have a good experience. If you like what you see, don't hesitate to buy it the second it becomes in stock at e-tailers around the world.

If you're here fresh from our Nvidia Founders Edition review for the new Ampere RTX 3080, you'll be aware of how monstrous the performance is from these upgraded RTX cards. If you're here without reading that first, well obviously go and read that as it details all that is new with the Ampere GPU, but for simplicities sake, we will bring you up to speed. Bigger, better, faster, more is the cornerstone of the RTX 3080 when compared to the previous Nvidia flagship card, the RTX 2080 Ti. The Ray Tracing works better, the card itself is significantly faster in every resolution and any combination of ray tracing being on, DLSS being on, or off, or anything. It's just bleeding fast. DLSS deserves a special mention as this second generation of the technology not only brings even bigger performance gains than those we saw in its limited use on the Turing cards, but it also has much sharper image quality. It's having your cake and eating it, and something we can't wait to see implemented in more games as the future rushes towards us. Given how 2020 has gone so far, we can't wait to reach 2021. The MSI is here in Gaming X Trio format. If you follow the hardware world, you'll know that the triple-fan cooling of the Frozr Trio was outstanding on the Turing RTX 2080 Ti, and the move to the Ampere RTX 3080 hasn't diminished that combination of high cooling performance and low noise. It's one of those coolers, like all the triple fan ones we're reviewing today, that shows an extra fan can make a big difference, letting your card boost higher because it has more thermal headroom, but running the fans slower and thus quieter, because each has to handle a little less of the cooling workload. Overclockers will appreciate the 24 pin PCIe power input potential. Admittedly on our pre-release drivers, the overclock worked but wasn't stable enough to test in our full suite of games. Still, clearly there is a lot of potential awaiting you as drivers and the OC tools fully support what ampere has available. If nothing else it's a more suitable placement of the power connectors than the central one we saw on the Founders Edition and requires no cable adaptors. Performance is so spectacular it almost goes without saying. If you've been checking out the results in this review, you'll see that the MSI Gaming X Trio regularly gets in amongst it at the top of our graphs. The build quality is solid, and that deserves special praise. We can't recall having a card that weighed this much but sat at perfect right angles to the back of our case. Sturdy in the extreme. The only, tiny, fly in the ointment is that this is the most expensive of the four RTX 3080 cards we've reviewed during launch week. Remember too that relative to the RTX 2080 Ti it replaces at the top of the Nvidia range the Gaming X Trio is still 400+ pounds cheaper than before. Expensive is relative after all. We do think that the implementation of the RGB is a bit lazy with no real design flare gone into it, that side of it when you think about it actually feels a bit rushed/lazy. There is no doubt that the RTX 3080 should be in the rig of anyone with a lust for high frame rates and MSI Gaming X Trio guise it is cool, quiet, fast and built like a tank. Glorious.
