Crucial P5, M.2

For those that want to enjoy the nice price tag of the Crucial P5 series but need a little more performance, the 2TB version is a better option than the 1TB. However, if peak performance or the lowest cost is top of your list, there are several other options out there.

With high performance and high capacity, the brand-new Crucial P5 2TB NVMe SSD will delight enthusiasts! After the Crucial P1 NVMe SSD and the Crucial P2 NVMe SSD, we are today looking at the latest Crucial P5 M.2 NVMe SSD series on OCinside.de and test the highest P5 capacity of 2000GB.

The Crucial P5 is the newest addition to the company’s SSD portfolio, featuring 3D NAND, the PCIe Gen 3 NVMe interface and capacities ranging from 150GB to 2TB. The P5 is the company’s higher-end consumer drive (compared to the more budget-friendly, entry-level Crucial P2) and is meant to compete with products like the Samsung EVO, as Crucial boasts the drive as extraordinary fast. Though it did perform well enough in a few areas, it fell a bit short overall with mostly uneven results.

Crucial, who makes the MX500, our all-time favorite SATA SSD, has always been lagging behind the competition slightly when it comes to M.2 NVMe SSDs. Back in 2018, they released the QLC-based Crucial P1, which impresses with excellent price/performance, but can't compete with the various high-performance TLC offerings on the M.2 storage market. This changes with the Crucial P5, which is based on a completely new controller design that's been developed in-house at Micron, Crucial's parent company. The new controller, just called "DM01B2" for the lack of a better marketing name, is a modern 8-channel design with support for TLC and pseudo SLC caching. It also has full hardware-based encryption and reports data from two thermal sensors back to the host system—nearly all other M.2 NVMe SSDs only have one. As expected, the flash chips are provided by Micron. We've seen these 96-layer B27A 3D TLC chips on many SSDs before. Last but not least, 1 GB of fast DDR4-4266 provides storage for the SSD mapping tables, which helps with random write performance.

At the end of the day the Crucial P5 1TB SSD is a solid-performing drive, but it fails to be the ‘extraordinary’ drive that Crucial markets it as being. Maybe the engineering team can work some magic with firmware tweaks down the road, but for now its just another mainstream NVMe drive. Legit Bottom Line: The Crucial P5 M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs is a super fast PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe drive, but comes to market late when enthusiasts are transitioning over to PCIe 4.0 x4 NVMe SSDs!

It’s hard not to recommend the P5 SSD. It’s fast and reliable, and that’s what we expect from a high-quality SSD. Enthusiasts should be pretty satisfied with the performance of the Crucial P5 SSD, as it meets the expectations of both gamers and professional users alike.
