We actually find it a bit unique, as AMD Ryzen and Intel 11th Gen laptops and ultrabooks have been out for some time, but they contain the much cooler PCIe3 SSDs. It is no different in desktop use as there isn’t a manufacturer out there right now that would recommend operation of their Gen 4×4 SSD without thermal protection. Although we see temperatures coming down, I have to admit that I have had the itch lately just to buy a Gen 4×4 based ultrabook just to see if I could pull off the latest and greatest 7GB/s without the ultrabook becoming its own heatsink.

The available M.2 SSD form factors have been pretty constant over the past years. Basically everything uses the M.2 2280 format, which makes the drives 22 mm wide and 80 mm long. No doubt, these dimensions are great for desktops and most laptops. With the release of the Steam Deck and ROG Ally portable game consoles, this status quo has changed. An 80 mm SSD is suddenly pretty big, considering the whole Steam Deck is just 30 cm long and 12 cm wide. That's why these new consoles use drives built on the smaller M.2 2230 form factor—just 3 cm long.

Overall, if you’re looking for a well-performing QLC 2230 drive, the MP600 Core Mini does okay. The MP600 and Firecuda 520N performed pretty closely but ultimately, the MP600 Core Mini pulled ahead. Both of these drives use QLC and the same E21T Controller so the numbers do make sense.
