Die ROG Strix von ASUS kann im Test mit hoher Performance und einer soliden Kühlung überzeugen. Während die Lüfter im lastfreien Betrieb komplett zum Stehen kommen, erreicht die Karte auch unter voller 3D-Last lediglich rund 39 dB(A). Auch die maximale GPU-Temperatur erreichte gerade einmal 58 °C, was das enorme Potenzial der wuchtigen Quad-Slot-Kühlung verdeutlicht. Wo Licht ist, fällt bekanntlich auch Schatten: Die ROG Strix ist die erste Grafikkarte in unserem Testfeld, welche die Leistungsaufnahme des Gesamtsystems auf über 600 Watt ansteigen lässt. Das untermauert auch noch einmal, dass ein leistungsstarkes Netzteil als Grundvoraussetzung benötigt wird. Abgerundet wird die Darbietung der ASUS-Karte durch Features wie den Dual-BIOS-Switch oder die RGB-Beleuchtung mit umfangreichen Sync-Möglichkeiten. GPU Tweak steht obendrein als umfangreiches Softwaretool zur Verfügung.

As we said in the beginning, the ASUS ROG Strix 4090 OC has been reviewed on many websites and YouTube channels by now. These reviews mostly revolved around its use in gaming setups. It clearly tops all charts in performance, in many cases by a large margin in performance results. With the new lineup of NVIDIA Ada Lovelace series 4000 graphics cards, we see a drastic increase in power draw, and many may need to upgrade their power supplies to run these new cards. The next problem is the sear size of these new cards. The ASUS ROG Strix 4090 OC is 3.5 slots wide, which on our ASUS ROG Maximus Z690 Hero with the ASUS ROG Strix 4090 OC installed in the first PCIe slot will cover most of the second PCIe slot leaving only the GPU that can be installed. This can be a real problem if one wishes to run other cards. There are other motherboards with enough spacing that would allow a second card to be installed, but space is very tight, leaving little room for airflow. Out of the bunch of GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs that were released, the ASUS ROG Strix 4090 OC is about the largest of them all, so case size is another important factor. For those purchasing higher-end workstations like the Threadripper Pro systems we reviewed, a bit selling point is expandability. This card takes a lot of those PCIe expansion slots out of the equation just due to its sheer size. While many may say that the GeForce RTX 4090 is a gaming card, given the purchase price and operating costs, it is going to find its way into many professional settings as well. A disappointment is NVIDIA did not use DisplayPort 2.0 and instead stuck with DisplayPort 1.4a. The power connector is another controversial topic. Very soon after launch, we started seeing reports of power connectors burning up. It turns out to be a small number of the total number of units sold, but care must be taken when inserting the connector seems to have been the answer. In the lab, we installed and reinstalled our cards many times with no issues. It is clear that the performance of the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4000 Ada Lovelace series cards is a huge jump in performance to the last generation of graphics cards. It even outperforms 2x NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 SLI configurations in some cases. Workstation users can get very high-performing setups with a single card which will cut down on production times. With a single graphics card giving higher performance than SLI rigs of the past, drawing less power and heat, the new 4090s are hard to beat and can really speed up applications that use GPUs.

ASUS is using a 24+4 phase VRM design on their card, using only the most premium components available. Unlike nearly all cards reviewed today, which default to 450 W power limit out of the box, the ASUS STRIX ticks at 500 W by default, which adds a little bit of extra headroom for the card to boost higher out of the box. In terms of cooling, the card can impress too. This is the strongest air cooler tested today, only the watercooled MSI Suprim Liquid X does better in our apples-to-apples cooler comparison test, and only by a surprisingly small margin.

The ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 4090 O24G is the company's premium air-cooled RTX 4090 custom-design. It introduces a slick new, cyberpunk-looking design, which isn't just the largest air-cooled graphics card ASUS ever built, but is also the largest RTX 4090 we have with us right now. Bold, matte-design elements, pair with black, blue, and red accents, and several zones of addressable RGB LED lighting. The cooler shroud is made entirely of metal, and the best parts of it, near the flow-through vent, has an ROG logo made from diamond-cutting this metal surface.

The RTX 4090 Matrix is a highly customized design, with a large factory overclock and powerful watercooling solution. The clock speeds are rated at 2670 MHz Boost, which is the highest we've seen on any RTX 4090 model. Compared to the NVIDIA baseline setting of 2520 MHz, this is a 150 MHz increase or 6%. I'm surprised that they didn't overclock the memory chips, maybe there's some NVIDIA limitation that doesn't allow it. In our manual OC testing we saw good memory overclocking potential. Averaged over the 25 games in our test suite, at 4K resolution, the RTX 4090 Matrix Platinum beats the RTX 4090 Founders Edition by a whopping 8.7%. This is very impressive and in the range of what we could have expected from a hypothetical GeForce RTX 4090 Ti.

If you've been following along with our coverage of the latest in the Nvidia range of graphics cards, the RTX 4090, then the performance capabilities of the ASUS ROG Strix should come as no surprise. Nvidia already had a fairly dominant lead over the competition in games that support ray tracing, and the newest iteration of their RT and Tensor cores further the gap to incredible levels. Even if you'd just splashed out on the RTX 3090 Ti then the RTX 4090 will still make absolute mincemeat out of it. Whilst ray tracing might be the next big thing, it's still as performance heavy as 8x MSAA was when anti-aliasing first made its splash in the gaming world, but the RTX 4090, whatever you may think of the cost, shows that smooth ray traced games is possible today, and might be the norm in the not-too-distant future. It's jaw-droppingly impressive.

While the TUF Gaming RTX 4090 is undoubtedly a beast in terms of gaming performance, the additional 24GB of VRAM will almost certainly go unused unless you are utilizing it for rendering or lavish 4K/8K gaming. Compared to the 4090 founder edition, the TUF improved performance by over 2-3%. It is an excellent product in terms of gaming performance and graphics quality. My biggest concerns are not with performance but with cooling as it is just so BIG. This card consumes close to 435 Watts of power. You must be gaming at an Ultra HD resolution or higher to make sense of this card. Regardless of my disdain for price and energy waste, I do enjoy a decent piece of hardware inside a PC, except for the required NVIDIA-designed adaptor, which transforms four 8-pin PCIe power connectors into a 12+4 pin 12VHPWR. Three DisplayPort and one HDMI are available as video outputs. A sleek, three-dimensional backplate with a brushed aluminium finish is included. A dual-BIOS switch is located close to the power jack. ADA GPU architecture can perform skillfully and excellently; the GeForce RTX 4090 is a powerhouse. A good chunk of extra shader cores, nearly double performance Raytracing and Tensor cores, and underlying technologies like Shader Execution Reordering (SER) and DLSS 3.0 make the new product and Series 4000 shine. The GeForce RTX 4090 AD102 GPU has 76.3B transistors; I mean, OMG, staggering values. Starting at $1599; yes, the price is an unfavourable factor, and the amount of energy used as explained, is also something to ponder about. Both are high for this product to make any sense. For this graphics card to make any sense, you must play games in Ultra HD or at least start at a monitor resolution of 2560x1440. We also know that because the product is in a very narrow niche, the two negatives do not have to make sense to a lot of you as enthusiast components are a class of their own. Regardless of it all, I live and thrive on exciting technology; I like this piece of hardware inside a PC, though, because it is a magnificent product no matter how you look at it. The RTX 4090 will exhaust a lot of heat, so ensure you have a lot of ventilation. The card is big and heavy (2.3kg), but still looks great, but you need to make sure you can fit this inside your PC. The performance, man, that performance, it is all good. Take Flight Simulator 2020 combined with DLSS 3.0, you can fly at 100+ FPS in a higher resolution now. Cyberpunk at UHD with raytracing and DLSS easily passes 100 FPS. This is an Ultra HD card, and it shines in that area, whether shading (regularly rendered games) or hybrid ray-tracing + DLSS is used. It is a purebred stallion but needs a lot of power and will only cater to a small group of people. Should you buy this product? Well, from a more economical point of view, you would be better off with a to-be-released GeForce RTX 4070 or 4080. As conclusion we can say that ASUS did it right with the new TUF Gaming OC; yet, the default extra performance is only 2, maybe 3%; however, if you are genuinely into silent operation and stunning appearance, then we can recommend this card above the founder edition at roughly the same price.
