ASUS B550

In our testing, the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming performed brilliantly in our system tests with the quickest POST time from any AM4 board we've tested with our Ryzen 3700X so far. The B550-F Gaming also had an impressive DPC latency result, with a massive advantage over other boards we've tested at default settings. In our CPU and game testing, the B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi was competitive. Our overclocking testing showed good results and tight VDroop control, with solid VRM thermals too. To put it mildly, the B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi has better VRM thermals than some X570 models costing double the price, which is a big win for ASUS here. For $190 with Wi-Fi, or $190 without, ASUS provides a lot of quality and performance for the money. It puts to bed the expectation that B550 motherboards can't be as good quality as the X570 series models. Despite users expecting cheaper prices of B550, vendors look to have made improvements to the quality of the PCB to make sure the PCIe 4.0 implementation is optimal. There are lower cost B550 options available, but ASUS has a firecracker in the B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi and provides a solid alternative to X570.

We spent a lot of time in the early pages of this review going over the ways in which the ASUS ROG Strix B550-F and B550-E are surprisingly different for two models just a letter apart in their nomenclature. Our time with them only emphasised how they feel quite apart from each other. We understand that feeling is a nebulous concept and without experience of all eight of our B550 launch motherboards they appear, in raw benchmark terms at least, too similar to be called different. Let us try and explain.

During our time with the B550 motherboards it has become clear that they are surprisingly good considering that they are a more affordable version of the X570. It wasn't that long ago that if you got a chipset that was anything but the flagship take on that particular socket then you were having to give up a lot of performance and connectivity to obtain that lower price. However, in raw performance terms the B550 is just as good as the X570 thanks to some careful design choices and places to give up a little manufacturing cost to save some money.

ASUS seem to be on a winning streak with their motherboards for quite some time now, and I don’t see that trend changing any time soon. They have easily the biggest range of motherboards for every launch, giving consumers a very broad range of features and prices to choose from. The TUF gaming certainly represents great value for money though, as the performance was competitive, it looks great and of course, it’s mATX.

There are clearly a few ways Asus could have shaved a bit more cash off the price here, such as dipping down to a lesser audio codec, dropping an M.2 port, including fewer USB ports, or perhaps ditching WiFi or USB BIOS FlashBack support. However, combined with the beefed-up power delivery and cooling, what we have here is a motherboard that is more than up to the task of dealing with AMD's Ryzen 9 CPUs and will likely handle anything Zen 3 can throw at it, too.

Das erste B550-Mainboard von ASUS bei uns im Test war das ROG Strix B550-E Gaming (Hardwareluxx-Test) und heute werden wir uns das TUF Gaming B550M-Plus (Wi-Fi) näher anschauen. ASUS' TUF-Gaming-Reihe wurde ja nun schon seit einiger Zeit als Einstiegsklasse der ASUS-Gaming-Produkte deklariert, was natürlich auch den positiven Nebeneffekt hat, dass die TUF-Gaming-Mainboards zu einem interessanten Anschaffungspreis angeboten werden.

With AMD recently announcing that 400-series chipsets would support 4th Gen Ryzen CPUs, the B550 chipset has no longer been seen as merely a more affordable way than X570 to get PCIe 4.0 support as well as offering a future home to AMD's highly-anticipated Zen 3 CPUs. Instead, it's now facing questions from both sides, with B450 offering far lower pricing and X570 perhaps that premium swagger that has already lured many to part with their cash.

Last year, AMD released the Ryzen 5000 series desktop processors in one of the most monumental hardware launches of the modern era. This final step completed the Red brand's ascent back into the forefront of the desktop processor market that began with the launch of the first generation of Ryzen CPUs. With the Ryzen 3000 launch in 2019 came the AMD X570 chipset. Featuring PCIe 4.0 support, X570 was an impressive leap from generations past. It was also hot, with motherboards often including chipset cooling fans and, more significantly, expensive. The high cost of the chipset increased the average cost of X570 motherboards considerably over previous generations. While AMD has done a great job of maintaining motherboard compatibility with new generation processors, none of the previous-generation AM4 motherboards featured official PCIe 4.0 support, not even for the storage and PCIe controlled by PCIe 4.0 compatible CPUs. Enter B550, the more value-oriented little brother of X570. While the B550 chipset is PCIe 3.0 only, B550 motherboards support PCIe 4.0 from the CPU to the primary PCIe slot as well as the primary M.2 slot (dependent on a PCIe 4.0 ready CPU). That having been said, with PCIe 4.0 support also came increased cost.

Um gerade beim Overclocking gut gerüstet zu sein, hat ASUS das ROG Strix B550-E Gaming (Hardwareluxx-Test) nach kurzer Zeit gegen ein neues Refresh-Modell ersetzt. Eine deutlich bessere Figur soll demnach das neue ROG Strix B550-XE Gaming WiFi machen. Ob dies in der Tat so ist und wo die Unterschiede liegen, wollen wir in diesem Kurztest feststellen.

In den letzten Tagen haben wir uns intensiv mit dem ROG STRIX B550-I Gaming Mainboard von ASUS beschäftigt. Obwohl dieses nur einen Bruchteil der Größe eines normalen ATX Mainboards hat, bietet es nahezu alle Features seiner großen Brüder.

Gerade AMDs B550-Chipsatz ist natürlich geradezu prädestiniert für den Einsatz auf einem Mini-ITX-Mainboard. Mit dem Gigabyte B550I AORUS Pro AX hatten wir bereits einen der Winzlinge in der Redaktion. Heute jedoch dreht sich alles um ASUS' ROG Strix B550-I Gaming, das dieselben kompakten Abmessungen besitzt. Macht es im Vergleich einen besseren Job?

Das ASUS ROG Strix B550-I Gaming ist aktuell zu einem Preis von ~210€ erhältlich. Zu diesem Preis bekommen wir ein solides Produkt, welches auch mit einem AMD RYZEN 9 3900X nicht ins Schwitzen kommt. Das Gesamtpaket des ASUS ROG Strix B550-I Gaming konnte uns überzeugen und erhält eine klare Empfehlung.

Mini ITX is sexy and you know it, the ROG STRIX B550-I Gaming certainly is an appealing looking product. I wrote this earlier in another review, but I am still fighting the idea that B550 is the budget series, but realistically if it shaves off a few coins in pricing, B550 really offers everything you need. Now I write this specifically as I went into this review 'blind' on pricing, meaning I had no clue what this board MSRP would be. With the current trends and Aorus Master pricing, I really expected this to be a motherboard in the 250 USD range, I mean I would not have been surprised about that. But much to my surprise, this motherboard is priced quite fair at 209 USD and roughly 229 EUR.

It has been a long time since I have had the opportunity to play with any hardware from Asus. From the onset of opening the box to installing the OS and testing, this has probably been one of the best experiences that I’ve had. I was really impressed with Armoury Crate and asking to install the drivers for the networking cards right out of the gate.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the launch of B550 is big because it can finally offer options for those who want improved VRMs and PCIe 4.0 without having to throw down for X570. The B550-I looks in a lot of ways like a higher-end board. Especially when it comes to having an upgraded VRM, the 8+2 configuration isn’t huge, but for an ITX board, it isn’t bad at all.

Wer als Ryzen-3000-Nutzer alle Features seiner CPU ausreizen wollte, musste lange zu teuren X570-Mainboards greifen - auch wenn er deren weitere Features gar nicht brauchte. Mit dem B550 I/O-Hub ändert sich dies. Wir haben ein Beispielexemplar genauer unter die Lupe genommen mit B450-Vorgängern sowie aktuellen Konkurrenten verglichen.

Mit dem AMD B550-Chipsatz ist es ASUS möglich, ein kostengünstigeres Mainboard herzustellen als mit dem X570-Chipsatz. So bietet das ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming die gleiche Spannungsversorgung wie das ASUS ROG Strix X570-F Gaming und hat sogar ein Wi-Fi-Modul verbaut, was dem X570-F Gaming fehlt. Mit einem Preis von ~200€ ist das ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming 80€ günstiger als der gleichnamige X570 Ableger und damit im Vergleich eine Preis-/Leistungsempfehlung.

Going beyond a standard feature set with WiFi, 2.5 Gb/s LAN, and an integrated I/O shield, the ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming is a great mid-range B550 board. When it comes to looks, the ASUS ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming has that classic STRIX aesthetic featuring a great RGB implementation as well as a design that is mostly neutral, with a flair of red and white accents.
